Making Tax Digital for Childminders: What You Need to Know (And How I Can Help)

What is MTD for Income Tax?

MTD for Income Tax is part of the UK government’s plan to modernise the tax system. It requires self-employed individuals, including childminders, to:

  • Keep digital records of their income and expenses.

  • Use compatible software to submit quarterly updates to HMRC.

  • File an End of Period Statement (EOPS) and a Final Declaration annually.

The goal is to reduce errors, improve accuracy, and make tax management more streamlined.

Preparing for MTD for Income Tax

The transition to MTD might seem daunting, but breaking it down into manageable steps can make it easier:

  1. Understand the Timeline: MTD for Income Tax is being rolled out in phases. Check when it applies to you based on your income and business type.

  2. Review Your Current System: Assess how you currently keep records. Are they digital? If not, now is the time to start planning your switch.

  3. Choose Compatible Software: HMRC has a list of approved software providers. Select one that suits your needs and budget.

  4. Get Familiar with Digital Tools: If you’re new to digital record-keeping, take time to learn how your chosen software works.

Keeping Digital Records

One of the biggest changes under MTD is the requirement to keep digital records. This doesn’t mean you need expensive software—spreadsheets can be sufficient if they meet HMRC’s requirements. However, dedicated accounting software can offer additional benefits, such as:

  • Automating calculations.

  • Generating invoices and receipts.

  • Providing real-time insights into your finances.

Changes to Accounting Rules

MTD introduces some changes to how you report your income and expenses. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Simplified Expenses: If you use part of your home for childminding, you may be able to use simplified expenses to calculate your business costs. However, be aware that the rules around apportionment are changing (more on this later).

  • No More Wear and Tear Allowance: Previously, childminders could claim a wear and tear allowance to account for the depreciation of household items used in their business (e.g., furniture, toys, or equipment). Under MTD, this allowance has been removed.

  • No Under £10 Receipt Waiver: In the past, you may have been able to claim expenses under £10 without keeping a receipt. Under MTD, this waiver no longer applies. You must now keep receipts for all business expenses, regardless of the amount. As a childminder, you will not receive a receipt for many of your costs e.g. purchase of ice creams, outings toddler groups, I can help you resolve this issue.

  • Changes to Apportionment Rules: If you use part of your home for childminding, you’ll need to apportion your household expenses (e.g., rent, mortgage interest, utilities) between personal and business use. Under MTD, the rules for apportionment are being updated to ensure fairness and accuracy. I can help you apportion correctly.
